Privacy Policy

1. The short version

Tadori Japanese works without an account. Signed out, your study history stays on your iPhone and none of it is transmitted anywhere. You can choose to sign in with Apple, which backs your progress up so it survives a lost phone; section 3 says exactly what that copies and where it goes. Either way there is no analytics SDK in the app, no advertising and no tracking. Section 6 lists every service the app talks to and when.

2. What is stored, and where

Your lessons, reviews, streak and settings are stored locally on your iPhone. They are included in an encrypted iOS device backup if you have one enabled. Deleting the app deletes them, and if you have never signed in, that is the only copy that has ever existed.

3. Accounts and progress backup

Signing in is optional and the app is fully usable without it. There is one way to sign in, Sign in with Apple, and it happens natively on the device rather than through a browser.

Apple gives us your name once, on the first authorization only, and the email address you choose to share, which may be Apple's private relay address rather than your own. While you are signed in, the app keeps a copy of your progress on our server: your lessons, reviews, streak and settings, plus a log of each review, which records the card, the answer you gave, when, the card's scheduling state at the time, and whether you got it right. It does not copy your recent dictionary searches.

That copy is stored with Supabase, and row-level security in the database limits every row to the account that created it. You can delete the account, and the server copy with it, from inside the app. Deleting it leaves your iPhone's copy exactly where it is: withdrawing from the backup is not the same as asking to lose your streak.

4. Notifications

Reminders are scheduled on your device. There is no push server and no device token - the word “notifications” usually implies one, so it is worth being precise. Permission is optional and you can withdraw it at any time in iOS Settings.

5. Purchases

Some content is part of a paid subscription. Apple processes every payment and we never receive your card or payment details. RevenueCat handles subscription status for us and tells the app whether a purchase is active. If you are signed in, your purchase is linked to your account so it follows you to a new phone; signed out, it is tied to the device and restored through Apple.

6. Third parties

Four services are involved. Supabase stores the progress backup described in section 3. RevenueCat holds subscription status. Apple provides sign-in and processes payments, under its own privacy policy and its existing relationship with you. Expo delivers over-the-air updates, which means the app asks Expo whether a newer version exists. Signed out, Supabase is never contacted at all. RevenueCat and Expo are contacted on launch whether or not you have bought anything, because the app checks for an active subscription and for a newer version; with no account signed in, the identifier RevenueCat sees is an anonymous one created on your device.

The dictionary and other Japanese-language data are bundled into the app as files. They are data, not services - nothing is sent to their authors, and every source is listed with its license.

7. Children

Tadori Japanese is not directed to children under 13. Used signed out it collects no personal information from anyone, of any age; signed in it holds the name and email address Apple provides, and the study progress described in section 3.

8. This website

This website is a separate thing from the app. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and has no third-party embeds, which is why there is no consent banner - there is nothing to consent to. If you email us, we keep that message for as long as it takes to answer you and any follow-up.

If a page on this site fails, the server records the error so it can be fixed. Those reports go to Sentry, they are made by the server rather than by anything running in your browser, and they deliberately exclude what you sent: no form contents, no cookies, no query string and no IP address. What is kept is the error itself and the address of the page it happened on.

9. Changes and contact

This policy changes when the app's behavior changes, and the date at the top says which behavior it describes. Questions: [email protected].
